president obama was just starting his first term, news networks, including this one, made a somewhat unusual decision to show live on tv the arrival of one of the new cabinet secretaries at the department that she had just been appointed to lead. to broadcast live essentially a cabinet secretary's first day on the job. the reception that that cabinet secretary got that day was raucous. lady michelle obama was on hand via satellite from the diplomatic room at the white house to give the presentation. white house photographer pete souza tweeted thought photo and the first lady is giving the honor. she sent a statement that in part read she's a movie lover and was honored to celebrate the artists who inspire us and our children. the first lady will join her husband and vice president and dr. jill biden in speaking today to the national governor's association in the state dining room. mrs. obama is going to ask that the governors work with her to help make it easier for returning veterans to transfer into civilian life. she wants states to pass laws or enact proposals that will help them get professional credentials or licenses without having to relearn or go through the motions of relearning the skill sets they already know. and that way they will be licensed for credentialed for civilian life. president obama discussed the collection of bipartisan governors from across the country last night. he asked for smart, common sense solutions to the challenges ahead in cr

, austerity has been hurting obama's economy, for the last four years. government spending has gone down in ten of the last 12 quarters. under ronald reagan and george w. bush you will find this part of economic growth and spending is pretty much all growing under the two republicans. you can see it under the graph. under reagan, it added in his first term a bit more than 6/10th of a percentage point, under bush, about half a point. under obama, it has been negative. if obama is a socialist he is terrible at it. here is the interesting thing, if the economy is shrinking because the economy is shrink, we now added new jobs, almost 200,000 jobs in december. and we added more than 150,000 jobs in january. what is amazing about this, this period was fiscal cliff element, it was what everybody was saying the economy really needed was deficit reduction. and this is a period in which we didn't come to a big deficit reduction deal. what we did is raise taxes. it cut the deficit a bit, but not a big deal. what happened to the markets? somehow we kept adding jobs and the stock market did really we

, and they have at the most popular politician in the country behind their back. president obama said he is ready to work with them. notably he and former president bill clinton had become more eager to get ahead, more progressive, vs senate democrats. you've got to be ready to compromise a little bit with the other elements of congress in the coming months. you are going to have defections when it comes to gun control, immigration, and what we may have to do with a fiscal policy. host: you touch on that point, an unlikely ally for house democrats, the speaker of the house, john boehner. guest: that is something that many democrats have pointed out. he made -- he may need them to get some of these bills passed. as he did with the debt ceiling vote. as he did with the bill for hurricane sandy victims. as it came with the fiscal cliff agreement. i see that as a possibility with a gun control and immigration, because while republicans cannot be eager and willing to discuss the issues, pulling suggest that the house may have to pass something. i will meet democrats. host: -- they will need democrats.

this the don't shift blame amendment. the bill before us today tries to blame president obama for all our fiscal woes. judging by the language of this legislation, i'm convinced that house republicans live in a world where our entire national debt suddenly appeared on january 21, 2009. but let's be clear. our debt was not created by the president alone, and while the president may be responsible for sending us a budget blueprint, it is ultimately congress that holds the power of the purse. i think my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are forgetting a key part of our job. the president does not pass budget, nor does he appropriate funds. congress does. my amendment makes a simple change to the finding section of the bill that clarifies that congress has the constitutional responsibility to fund the federal government. now, i can guarantee that when the majority introduces its budget this month it will be so extreme that it has no chance of passing both houses. the republican majority seems to be able to come together for meaningless proposals, but they know that when it comes to se
